Loma Vista Environmental Science Academy was visited by Jesse Bethel Grad, Cal Berkeley athlete, and Super Bowl winning Denver Bronco CJ Anderson on Monday afternoon.  He was here to promote his new organization which looks to offer vital life experiences to impact and change the culture of success for local children and teens.  The facility is on Mare Island, and it will promote academics and athletics to broaden the horizons of our youth and build the roadmaps for achievement.  The Dreams Never Die Foundation is a 501(c) non profit organization with a mission to provide inner city and low-income youth the resources needed to persevere and ultimately reach their maximum potential in academics and/or athletics.  He went to school at Elsa Widenmann, Solano and JBHS, and was friends with our very own Mr. Henry and Mr. McGriff.  If you would like more information about the organization, check their web site at www.dndfoundation22.com or contact Program Director Clifton Hayes at c.hayes@dndfoundation22.com

LOMA VISTA FARM has been a resource for environmental education and experiences for Vallejo's children and community for over four decades. SUSTAINABLE SOLANO has been working towards community sustainability since 1999. These two natural partners are coming together to create a Permaculture Demonstration Public Garden. On Saturday November 18 from 9 am to 4 pm the public is invited to come work on the installation of the demonstration garden at VCUSD's Loma Vista Farm.

Permaculture is centered on earth care, people care, and fair share. Learn about how these permaculture concepts apply to this garden and our community, as well as how it can be applied to your own gardens. Build together: plant trees, dig swales, and mulch as you create the first layer of the Permaculture Public Garden. Share a table and meet new friends over pizza and drinks provided at lunch. We will end the event with information about the overall design, use of secondary water, and details and tips for how to involve children in the creation/learning process. This event is FREE and open to the public. If you have questions, please contact, Sustainable Landscaping Manager, Nicole Newell at nicole@sustainablesolano.org

Youth Backpack Program Logo

The Backpack Program first began in the Vallejo City Unified School District in Vallejo, CA, as a way to give back to the Sabathia’s home community. Since then, the program has grown to include the New York Tri State Area and public schools in the Bronx. As a single parent, CC’s mom Margie often could not afford to buy CC back to school supplies and a new backpack to start the school year.  She hopes this program will help other single mothers and families and perhaps can take one less burden off of a parent’s shoulders. Our goal is to provide the children with everything they will need to start them off in the right direction!

Our streets are smooth!!! The VCUSD has completed the paving project to fix the street that loops around Loma Vista!     The project took two weeks and has been completed and painted. Please remember that both Rainier and Olympic are one-way streets.  Please do not drive into the school from Corccoran on Olympic - YOU will be going the wrong way!  The only legal way to get to the cafeteria or middle school side of the campus is to drive into the campus on Rainier and go around the farm.  Please watch out for children, adults, and animals.

From an article by Kenzi Bizbing, Youth Services Manager, Oakland Mediation Center

Dr. Dan Olweus defines bullying as "when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself." Bullying behavior has three key components. First, it is a form of aggression. Second, it is a repeated behavior. This is not to say that adults should wait until they see a pattern before intervening. Adults rarely see the pattern. Third, there is an imbalance of power or strength. This imbalance of power can be physical, emotional, verbal, and subtle and makes it difficult for youth to defend themselves. There are several things that influence how much power a person has– social status, gender, race, religion, abilities, money, real or perceived sexual orientation, etc. Overall, it is important to remember that bullying is a form of peer abuse.
